Steve Coltman was a member of the Liberal Democrat party's defence policy working groups in 1994 and the one that recently completed its work this year. Coltman proposed the Review of Alternatives to Trident in a conference motion in 2011. The motion was not chosen for debate but it was eventually adopted as government policy. For the past 3 years Coltman has been chair of the Association of Liberal Democrat Engineers & Scientists.

Coltman previously worked in the chemicals industry and took early retirement.
