In our on-going efforts to feature military perspectives on defence, Defence IQ takes a fresh look at modern artillery in the British Army. Here, Robert Densmore speaks with Major Tom Ellis, the training development advisor for the Royal Artillery. This first segment of our three part interview zeroes in on what simulation can add to live fire training. Virtual Battle Space is the next generation software that is enabling gunnery students to refine their individual joint fires training - by adding complexity and realism to simulation. At a time when artillery regiments must produce a large number of qualified graduates in a short period of time and at reduced cost, VBS provides articulated and streamlined training based on students' needs. As Major Ellis says here, it's all about "eliminating the fear of failure".
