Royal Air Force Considers 25 Percent Reduction in Personnel

UK air force chiefs are looking to implement a series of drastic economy measures, including a 25 percent cut in Royal Air Force (RAF) personnel, to cope with predicted real-term cuts in defence spending over the next 10 years. The RAF is proposing to cut its strength from 41,000 to 31,000, close down up to five large air bases and retire the bulk of its BAE Systems Harrier GR.9 and Panavia Tornado GR.4 combat aircraft by the middle of the next decade.
