The European Defence Agency was formed in 2004 and is directly responsible for the planning and implementation of military crisis planning. Their mandate by the EU Council provides them with a limited budget for future solutions to fulfill member state missions and security operations. The limits placed on each department within the European Defence Agency provide a unique challenge specifically to the future weapons platforms of member states.
Colonel Erich Weissenboeck heads the Precision Engagement arm within the European Defence Agency and is directly charged with creating and implementing precision weapon and soldier solutions. The current state of global conflict and the asymmetric warfare that is being fought today create a very different outlook to the warfighter as a system. The threat of terrorism on domestic civilian targets also creates an environment where military leaders in Europe must look internally for deterrence and disaster planning.
Soldier as a system enables leaders and crisis response coordinators the ability to tap into multiple sources of ground intelligence simultaneously. Combat troops outfitted with a multi-dimensional communications platform upload real time data and intel to emergency responders and larger scale crisis response planners. The European Union as a whole provides a blanket organization for information sharing and crisis management on a multi state scale. In this media presentation, Col. Weissenboeck discusses the unique challenges and roles that the Precision Weapon directorate within the European Defence Agency faces in their domestic planning.
