Afghanistan is currently a major focus as the fight against terrorism brings together a melting pot of countries, and all of the nations involved are members of the NATO-run International Security and Assistance Force (ISAF). One of the key advantages to ISAF’s existence is the broad spectrum of international experience that is brought to the battlefield and planning side of operations in Afghanistan.

As of April 2009, 42 different nations are contributing troops to the 26 Provincial Reconstruction teams. The current strength of troops on the ground is approximately 58,000 responsible for a coverage area of over 650,000 square km.

Colonel Huub Vullinghs of the Netherlands served as the Chief of Information Operations in theatre from April 2007-April 2008. Serving on his first operational deployment, Colonel Vullinghs speaks of the challenges he initially faced in coordinating the information across the entire nation of Afghanistan. Given the extremely difficult environment, the dissemination of information across all spectrums was a unique and daunting task for a multi-nation force. Colonel Vullinghs describes in detail his experiences and hopes for the future.
