Multi-mission naval offshore patrol vessels are logically the next evolutionary step for naval forces worldwide. Historically, however, it has been difficult to re-purpose traditional offshore patrol vessels such as corvettes and frigates for a broad range of missions: disaster relief, maritime interdiction, SAR, hydrography and surface warfare, to name a few. Rene Quezada is the Naval Project Manager for Fassmer and describes how OPV design lends itself to fulfilling the broad palette of missions required today, especially by the Chilean and Argentinean navies.

Offshore patrol vessels(OPV) are fine for fighting piracy, rescue missions, surface surveillance, and uncontested sovereignty patrol. They cannot stand up to a vessel with antiship missiles, large caliber guns, or submarines. If you add the capability to withstand these kind of threats, you longer have an OPV, but a frigate or large corvette.
