London, 25th January, 2014 - With only two weeks left until the senior speaking faculty at CABSEC 2014 convenes, the Defence IQ team has added an unprecedented surprise to the programme by confirming that Pablo Escobar’s son will address the attendees of the event via teleconference.

Sebastian Marroquin was born Juan Pablo Escobar - the son of the infamous head of the Medellin Cartel. His father was shot dead in December 1993 as he tried to escape police and, at the height of his powers in 1989, he was ranked the 7th richest man in the world by Forbes magazine with an estimated £18 billion fortune.

Sebastian’s message is a powerful condemnation of the impact of the drugs trade on individuals and society: "As members of the Escobar family, we have to accept responsibility for what happened and ask for forgiveness for everything Colombia suffered because of my father's crimes."

He will join senior government officials, defence ministers, heads of navies and coast guards and senior defence and police officers involved in regional security and surveillance. During the main conference, these representatives will help to shape the debate on how best to approach collective maritime security for separate island nations and contribute to the conversation on Caribbean maritime security priorities.

Senior officials attending the event include:

  • Hon. Freundel J. Stuart, Prime Minister and Minister of National Security, Barbados
  • H.E. Mario Zamora, Minister of Public Security, Costa Rica
  • H.E. Ambassador Adam Blackwell, Secretary of Multidimensional Security, Organization of American States (OAS)
  • H.E. Ambassador Mikael Barfod, Head of EU delegation to Barbados & East Caribbean EEAS
  • James Story, Director of Western Hemisphere Programs, Bureau of International Narcotics U.S. Department of State
