Jane's Defence Weekly Briefing: Mobile Mortar Systems
The majority of armies deploy self-propelled (SP) mortars to provide an indirect fire capability to their mechanised units. These SP mortar systems are normally operated by the infantry, although in some cases - such as within the Canadian and French militaries - mortars now come under the operational control of the artillery, who have access to a much wider range of target acquisition systems.
