Military airlift market worth $65 billion over 10 years

Add bookmark

Over the next 10 years, more than 800 new military airlifters are forecast to be delivered, valued at $65 billion. The principal manufacturers will be Airbus Military (A400M) and Lockheed Martin (C-130/C-5M), but Embraer will be a significant newcomer to the market (KC-390). Over 4,000 Military Airlifters are in-service worldwide, with the C-130 Hercules, the most prolific type at more than 1,000 aircraft in 66 countries. There are also 763 Military Tankers in service or on order in 32 countries.

It’s likely to be an exceptionally busy year for the airlift industry as personnel and supplies are withdrawn from Afghanistan. However, even with the end of that conflict, demand for airlift is unlikely to drop as there will always remain a requirement for transport that can facilitate deployments in a matter of hours. The French deployments in Mali and the Central African Republic are testament to that. The Military Airlift conference will seek to identify the lessons learnt from recent and ongoing operations, in order to share best practice for the future.

Additionally, this year’s event offers the first real opportunity to assess whether the A400M has been worth all the hype. By September 2014, the French will have had it in service for over a year and we will be discussing its operational performance in assisting deployments in Africa.

Judging a platform’s cost-effectiveness is perhaps more important than it has ever been, for despite signs of economic recovery in some countries, defence budgets are still facing austere days ahead. One of the central aims of this conference is to carry out a cost-benefit analysis of some the options available for cash-strained militaries, ranging from air charter, to overhauling existing aircraft, to pooling and sharing resources.
