Malaysia has invited companies to discuss its long-standing airborne early warning requirement but budget restraints makes a decision on the AWE system unlikely before at least 2012. The Royal Malaysian Air Force is likely to request eight AEW aircraft in the 2011-15 budget.

Northrop Grumman’s E-2D Advanced Hawkeye and the Saab 2000 equipped with Sweden’s Erieye radar are the main contenders for Malaysian AEW aircraft. An Erieye equipped Embraer EMB-145 proposal appears to have been dropped from consideration. The air force has said it requires a relatively lightweight, low-cost AEW system to improve the situational awareness of its Boeing F/A-18D and Sukhoi SU-30MKM pilots.

The selected AEW aircraft should also be capable of monitoring naval vessels, especially in the Malacca Straits. Four new maritime patrol aircraft are also required. Likely candidates include systems based on the ATR 42 from Alenia Aeronautica, the Indonesian Aerospace CN-235, Fokker 50 and Saab 340.
