Malaysia has released requests for information (RFIs) for up to 40 new fighters and two airborne early warning (AEW) aircraft as part of its five-year national defence plan. The fighters are required to replace its F-5E/Fs and MIG-29s. A decision was recently made to replace the latter by the end of 2010.
Meanwhile, a head-to-head contest for the AEW requirement is likely between Northrop Grumman and Saab with their E-2C Hawkeye and an Erieye radar-equipped platform respectively.
It is also possible that Malaysia could soon sign a letter of intent for 4 CN-235 maritime patrol aircraft. These are required to replace the four Beechcraft Super King Airs that were delivered in 1994.
