Indonesia to Upgrade Air Force

Indonesia’s air force plans to issue a new request for funds to launch a competition to replace its BAE Systems Hawk 53 trainers and Rockwell OV-10 Bronco light combat aircraft. With Indonesia’s economy recovering faster than many others in Asia, Jakarta could be set to fund several new defence projects this year. Indonesian air force commander Air Marshal Imam Sufaat says a fresh request will be made shortly, as both types need to be replaced urgently.
Budget constraints could lead to a trainer being selected which could also be used for light attack duties in place of the aged Bronco. Indonesia recently prioritised the acquisition of new maritime patrol and transport aircraft, but its air force has been pushing the government to upgrade its existing Lockheed F-16A/Bs and purchase more Sukhoi Su30MKMs.
