A 15 nation memorandum of understanding has been signed, that will advance the E1.5 Billion ($2.2 Billion) Alliance Ground Surveillance project. The MOU was signed on the 25th September and could lead to the finalising of a contract with Northrop Grumman, the prime contractor and its multinational industry partners, next year.
The RQ-4B Global Hawk high-altitude, long-endurance UAV is the chosen system for the programme. Eight Block 40 standard Global Hawks and related ground control and image exploitation equipment are expected to be purchased, with service entry scheduled for 2012. The UAVs will be based at Sigonella in Sicily.
